Couples Therapy Workbook
Kathleen Mates-Youngman
A structured 30-day program of guided couple conversations, used with a clinician, that rebuilds emotional, spiritual, and physical connection in distressed relationships.
What it’s about
Couples Therapy Workbook offers therapists and the couples they treat a ready-made framework of thirty guided conversations designed to reverse the vicious cycle in which busy lives erode nurturing, intimacy declines, irritation grows, and communication collapses. Built around a nightly 'connection ritual' and organized into four themed weeks—Who Are We?, Who Am I?, How Do We Work?, and What Do We Want?—each conversation pairs a brief psycho-educational description grounded in relationship research with ten reader-friendly questions that partners ask one another. By eliminating the anxiety of not knowing what to discuss, educating couples about healthy relationships, and creating the actual experience of shared, undistracted time, the workbook helps couples move from disconnection to renewed empathy, respect, trust, and passion.
The through-line
- Who it’s for
- A couple (or a therapist's clients) who feel disconnected, bored, or like strangers to each other and want to rebuild closeness and communication.
- The problem
- The couple no longer communicates well, has lost intimacy, and doesn't know what to talk about to reconnect. They feel lonely, discouraged, irritated, and unsure whether the relationship can be saved.
- The plan
- Create a nightly connection ritual: quiet time, tea, music, candle, open and non-judgmental mindset.
- Read the brief description for each daily topic, then take turns asking the ten guided questions.
- Work through the four weekly themes over 30 days (or longer), processing each with a clinician.
- Rate connection on a 1-10 scale and reflect on what was learned.
- Return periodically to the Booster Session to maintain the connection.
- The payoff
- The couple feels more passion, connection, and intimacy than before. · Partners understand each other's history, temperament, and needs and treat each other with empathy and respect. · They handle conflict constructively and continue nurturing the relationship day after day.
